8. "RE: Hip Hop" |
i was just listening to the perceptionists album i recommended and while it's good, it's in no way a necessary album. strike that one from the list. another KILLER album is Giant Panda - Fly School Reunion. it's also somewhat more along the lines of what you're looking for in that it's closer to old school hip hop. and yes, one of the mc's is japanese and he's great! From amazon.com: 2005 saw many remarkable underground releases ; Oktober - The Art Of Raw, One Be Lo - Sonogram, O.C. - Starchild just to name a few, but it has to be Giant Panda's "Fly School Reunion" that reigns as the most hard-hitting, original & refreshing album to come out at a time when authentic & fun-loving music was missing. Maanumental (Black lead MC), Newman (White MC/Producer) & Chikaramanga (Japanese Producer/MC) are a trio that make up the group Giant Panda. Hailing from 2 different places ; Seattle (Newman, Maanumental) & L.A. (Chikaramanga), Giant Panda offer a very diverse listen on Fly School Reunion, in terms of both the artists' own personalities & indeed the music they make together. The most notable thing about this particular group is that they sound remarkably like their close LA affiliates, People Under The Stairs (Thes One & Double K). This mainly being down to the fact that for some odd reason both Maanumental & Newman are indeed very reminiscent of Thes One, in both delivery & charisma. However saying this, it has to be said that no matter how much of a massive fan I am of the P, both Maanumental & Newman are on a totally different level, lyrically, to both Thes & K, purely for their complex, flavorful & innovative word-play that both successfully demonstrate. Straight B-Boy's. The production courtesy of Chikaramanga & Newman (the majority) is also very similar to that of PUTS, with the SP sounding funk, snares, hi-hats, pefectly flipped samples, cuts & alla the rest of that good stuff! that has made both Thes & K, two of my favourite producers, period. The production here is AMAZING...with Thes One actually dropping by for the tracks "Super Fly" & "Racist". The best part of FSR, is that not only does every single track have for 1) amazing production but also all provide flawless, charasmatic lyricism throughout, a combination that just begs for more spins. The highlights of the album have to be the fantasticly charming "With It", the hard-hitters "Just Cause" & "Sho' Improve", the laid-back "Always Dope", the thought-provoking "racist", the ridiculously funky "TKO" & the beautifully atmospheric "Strings". A very original & fresh quality about GP is Chikaramanga, who is a Japanese MC/Producer who demonstrates his own flava & lyrical ability (in japanese mostly) over approx 1/3 of the tracks. Very different, and it works fantastically only adding to both Newman's & Maanumental's additional impact. It is evident that Giant Panda stay true to their roots, but maintain both their originality & progression at the same time...resulting in an essential to those, fortunately, who have not subcumb to the brain-washing material being put out under the name of "hiphop" (and other genres). If they carry on in this direction, I believe that they may even become as successful, respected & indeed just as untouchable as the legendary P. Bottom Line>> I can't say enough postive things about this album, it is quickly becoming one of my favourites & best-buy's for a long time. You have to listen to truly appreciate Giant Panda...cop this ish. PEACE Lyrics - 10/10 Beats - 10/10 Originality - 9.5/10 Replay Value - 10/10

LAST EDITED ON Nov-16-07 AT 11:22 PM (EST)one of the most amazingly gifted lyrical mc's that most people haven't heard of (he's too hardcore and in your face to ever be anything other than underground, imo): immortal technique. at best so-so beats, but brilliantly talented lyricism. some may find him offensive though! "i jerk off inside books and give life to words, leaving concepts stuck together you probably never heard. i love when people think i'm psychologically disturbed cause it means i overloaded their neurological nerves." "i'll rip the electrons out your body and make you positive." here's a link to one of his songs from revolutionary vol. 1, called dance with the devil. immortal technique - revolutionary vol 1 dance with the devil 320 kbps; 15.62 MB; 06:49 http://www.sendspace.com/file/jnxor4 i'll stop now, ha. let's just say that i have a passion for hip hop.

The Coup, their newest album "Pick a Bigger Weapon" is awesome. As is "steal this album" Boots Riley is the MC, politically conscious hip hop with an awesome funk backing band and the spinstress definetely dropping old school samples. That and another heads up for Edan's beauty and the beat, one of the best hip-hop albums ever in my mind.

19. "Galactic w/ MCs-download this show from etree" |
I recently taped Galactic @ Roseland in NYC (11/17/07).http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=511453&viewcomm=323752#comm323752 They played with a bunch of MCs, Chali 2Na (Jurassic 5), Boots Riley, Mr. Lif, the Lifesavas, etc. Chali 2Na and Boots Riley were especially good and the end Immigrant Song/Freestyle Rap 'Jam' was a show stopper (6 different MCs). Check it out. If anyone out there has the following gig, PLEASE let me know, my gear went down and I have yet to locate a copy (there were other tapers there): Galactic 11/12/05 Irving Plaza NYC Peace & Enjoy, Rick

24. "RE: Hip Hop" |
My favorite hip hop groups are old school: The Roots Tribe Called Quest Pharcyde Digable Planets Guru's Jazzmatazz albums (the guy from Gangstarr, great lyricist) Cypress Hill (their self-titled debut album is some of the funkiest hip hop around, although they are kinda obsessed with guns)In my opinion, the best hip hop album of all time is The Roots "Do You Want More?". Its the only hip hop album that has a permanent place on my 8 GB iPod. I would like to politely disagree with anyone who recommends any artists from Definitive Jux, that label is horrible with the exception of Aesop Rock (whose material improves with every release). Now I am taking advantage of this forum to vent to anyone who wants to read: I dont listen to a lot of hip hop cause most of it sucks in my opinion. Especially nowadays in the age of Fruity Loops, Abelton Live, etc., Any guy off the street can record piano tracks in Guitar Center and take it home on a Cd and then edit it into a song. ALSO. I hate those guys who badger you on the streets of New York City and try to make you feel guilty for not buying their rap album. They are everywhere and I am done with being polite to them. When they try to hand you the CD, dont take it from their hand, thats the oldest trick in the book!!
