"still not doing it for me"
So I listened to Radiolarians II, is it better than one, yeah. Are there some nice grooves and good songs, yeah. Am I happy, unfortunately no. The first time I listened to the album I got bored and stopped before the last couple songs, I've listened to it five to six times since and it's just not killing it. I'm sad to say that I just can't wait for this whole "radiolarians experiment" to be over and for MMW to put out an amazing album I actually like. I'm sure this is all part of their progression, but I'm not a parent, I'll skip over the terrible twos and the thirteen year hormones and go straight to the kicking ass, come on MMW help me out.

Word. I remain enthusiastic about the Radiolarians Experiment primarily because it's just that, an experiment. Some solid tunes have definitely emerged, but I agree that the individual volumes aren't quite on par with MMW's previous studio albums, which are all incredibly strong. I miss the input of a producer like Scotty Hard, and prefer John's multi-keyboarded electronic sound to the piano-heavy Radiolarians grooves.

MMW introduced a number of great songs before embarking on Radiolarians, such as After the Onset/Onsen, New New Orleans, etc. and I imagine they've got nearly enough developed material for a proper studio project already. Can't wait to hear what will be next.....

To each his own. Personally, I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I never could get into EOTWP- way too overprocessed for my tastes, too many overdubs, and just overall lacks emotion. It sounds like a band fulfilling its last obligation to its record label.

R1 was a breath of fresh air, and R2 has taken it to the next level. The albums sound like they sound live- no studio tricks, etc. Starting their own label has invigorated the guys, and I can't wait until R3.

Go see them play it live and then see if you feel the same way. I wasn't really fond of R1 at first but after seeing them play it live it's grown on me. At the Baltimore show they opened with a 20-minute version of Reliquary and it nearly put me in a trance. I loved R2 from the first listen but even more so after going to a few gigs and from what I've seen I can't WAIT for R3!

also take into consideration, what do you think these guys want to do? they know that everyone wants to hear solid groove #####, like shack man. everybody loves it, that's what they want to hear live, etc etc.

but now they have complete creative control over their studio work, hence being on their own record label.

some of the radiolarians stuff is pretty groovy, good ol funky MMW, but a lot of it is a new direction. probably what they actually want to be doing, experimenting, trying some new stuff, breaking boundaries, shattering preconceptions and expectations.

much of it is heavily blues and rock influenced, alot of the Radiolarians I was really primal world music influenced.

i'm really digging the radiolarians stuff if not just for the simple fact that i can tell they are having a hell of a time, doing what they want, succeeding in their own minds and not just doing the same old same old jazzy groove funk

think back to let's go everywhere, the children's album. that was something COMPLETELY different. but billy martin said it was his favorite album of theirs yet. i can tell why. they did new stuff, experimented with some vocals and just had a great time

I prefer the stuff live. The shows I've seen were amazing. Granted I'm a bit of a neophyte, but experiencing it live completely overshadows the studio recordings for me. I've purchased RI and RII because I wanted to see what the outcome would be. I'll probably buy RIII for the same reason. But quite honestly, I don't think I've listened to I and II more than five times apiece. It does so much more for me when I can feel it.

OK, I tried to forego the "that's what she said" addition, but I just couldn't resist the temptation.
