thank you for your post! i really enjoyed your perspective. i WISH i could be part of that... maybe one day, if they're still doing it.i can't believe how much MMW has done over this past year! constantly touring: across the usa, overseas... released the radiolarians series (3 times in the studio to create a full length album) AND a children's album (make that 4 times in the studio)... the camp, recording a couple of track with Mike Stern for his CD (5 times in the studio)... i'm sure i'm missing some other stuff. all of this and jon's illness that resulted in canceled tour dates... it's crazy! MMW is my favorite group and it's exciting to follow all of this activity from them. again, thanks for posting! peace & music, joe

LAST EDITED ON Aug-18-09 AT 03:53 PM (EST) Hi Kids,
Another camper here. It's taking a while for this experience to sink in. Did this really happen? If I was dreaming, it was a pretty freakin' cool dream. Let me add to the previous comment. John, Billy, & Chris were absolutely the nicest and supportive guys. The tough decisions were about which workshops I would attend. Each guy, did one on different days, so you could make the rounds. Do I go for Soloing with Chris, or do I go to Afro-Cuban poly rhythms with Billy? David Tronzo did a workshop as well. Since I play guitar, that was no brain'er. I was also blessed to be part of John's ensemble. He gave everyone and opportunity to play and solo (if you wanted to). Supportive is an understatement. There's no "right & wrong", just "right & left". Not one bit of ego. We played 3 pieces which were honorably executed. Mojet (from Mago), Blue Rose (Ellington), & Butterfly (loosely based on one of Billy's Clave's). John ripped a mean Melodica solo along with us. How's that for a killer experience! Other, equally notable moments were playing bass lines with Chris at a workshop. My head nearly exploded when I pulled out my acoustic guitar and strummed Afro-Cuban rhythms accompanied by Billy on his drum kit. I can die a happy man. One thing that I have noticed about my playing since I have returned. Music feels continuous. By that I mean it does not start and stop. It feels to always be in motion. There is a lot less pressure when you feel that you don't have to start it. Now I just "step" into it. No one really showed this to me, nor was it part of a workshop or master class. I think that it just kinda rubbed off from MWW. Much more to say, but that will have to do for now.
