The five days at camp was unlike anything I've ever experienced. They said it was going to be a life changing experience, but it was more like a soul changing one.
Let me start by saying that I felt like sh-t about 75% of the time. The truly excellent organic food hit my toxic system and wreaked havoc the first full day I was there. I had trouble sleeping because of a number of factors so I only got about 3-4 hours each night and there were the nerves about performing in front of the guys. All that combined to make my days uncomfortable much of the time. But when the music happened each night I always felt completely better afterward. They did a great 65 minute improv the first night, the second night they played with David Tronzo and the show rocked. The fourth night they played with Steven Bernstein and Carl Berger and a free jazz singer named Ingrid. It was amazing and Berger who has to be in his 70's was bouncing around like a 10 year old kid. Then Bernstein called students up to perform with him. I woosed out because as cool as Bernstein is, he's slightly intimidating.
Let me talk about the guys. They are the coolest, nicest and probably most obsessed musically of any artists out there. I didn't work with Billy but I was in Chris' ensemble and went to all of John's workshops. Chris put together a great piece of music for us to perform and on the last night when my nerves where at their peak because every one of the student ensembles was just killing it and we had to go last, we performed the piece (which was a chain gang call and response song mixed with a jazz-blues middle and a long Fela Kuti inspired outro) and also killed it. Then MMW came up for a 10 minute extremely high energy Crosstown Traffic and the week was basically over. I cannot describe the feeling of pure joy that came over me after that. All of the problems and sh-tty feelings went away in a second and I felt like I was floating. I told Chris before we performed that it was torturous to make us go last and he said "tension is a good thing" and he was right because it makes the release so much sweeter.
John's workshops definitely kept you on your toes but he somehow managed to teach so much in so little time. Unlike Chris and Billy who did one big piece of music for the large ensembles, John did three smaller ensembles and somehow managed to get three excellent performances in four days. When he did his master class the last day he said in the spirit of improvisation that he was completely changing what he was planning to say. He then said some of the most poignant and emotional things about music that I've ever heard. After that he sat at the piano and played for over 30 minutes which Wood ribbed him about. As I said, it was magical.
I'll talk more about the crew and the Full Moon Resort later but for now I'll post this before I lose it.

Thanks for letting us in on something I would love to have been a part of. I too would appreciate any other recollections, stories of camp MMW.

The Tronzo performance must have been amazing! I dont suppose there are any recordings?

Thanks again

thank you for your post! i really enjoyed your perspective. i WISH i could be part of that... maybe one day, if they're still doing it.

i can't believe how much MMW has done over this past year! constantly touring: across the usa, overseas... released the radiolarians series (3 times in the studio to create a full length album) AND a children's album (make that 4 times in the studio)... the camp, recording a couple of track with Mike Stern for his CD (5 times in the studio)... i'm sure i'm missing some other stuff. all of this and jon's illness that resulted in canceled tour dates... it's crazy! MMW is my favorite group and it's exciting to follow all of this activity from them.

again, thanks for posting!

peace & music,
joe

Hi Kids,

Another camper here. It's taking a while for this experience to sink in. Did this really happen? If I was dreaming, it was a pretty freakin' cool dream. Let me add to the previous comment. John, Billy, & Chris were absolutely the nicest and supportive guys. The tough decisions were about which workshops I would attend. Each guy, did one on different days, so you could make the rounds. Do I go for Soloing with Chris, or do I go to Afro-Cuban poly rhythms with Billy? David Tronzo did a workshop as well. Since I play guitar, that was no brain'er.

I was also blessed to be part of John's ensemble. He gave everyone and opportunity to play and solo (if you wanted to). Supportive is an understatement. There's no "right & wrong", just "right & left". Not one bit of ego. We played 3 pieces which were honorably executed. Mojet (from Mago), Blue Rose (Ellington), & Butterfly (loosely based on one of Billy's Clave's). John ripped a mean Melodica solo along with us. How's that for a killer experience!

Other, equally notable moments were playing bass lines with Chris at a workshop. My head nearly exploded when I pulled out my acoustic guitar and strummed Afro-Cuban rhythms accompanied by Billy on his drum kit. I can die a happy man.

One thing that I have noticed about my playing since I have returned. Music feels continuous. By that I mean it does not start and stop. It feels to always be in motion. There is a lot less pressure when you feel that you don't have to start it. Now I just "step" into it. No one really showed this to me, nor was it part of a workshop or master class. I think that it just kinda rubbed off from MWW. Much more to say, but that will have to do for now.
