I agree. I wish that I could be a fly on the wall (or in a bottle) in the studio, or at the Shack. We as spectators should understand that yes we are part of the production, but we should not overstep our role. Let the artists paint their own picture, and then let them know how you feel about it. These guys are out there to produce, not to re-produce. how many people like going to work and doing the same thing every day? Please shut the hell up and just enjoy the show.

> >why is everything always blamed on >the hippies? > It's nothing personal really, after the demise of bands like the dead and phish fans of these bands had to find a new outlet. It's easy to blame unpleasantness in a place you feel comfortable on someone you're not used to seeing there. There are just as many jackasses at the shows who aren't dreadlocked and pachoulied. The only way any of us is going to hear bubblehouse live is to keep our traps shut, and see as many shows as possible. The last thing I want to hear is a song they're not in the mood to play.

Alot of times they couldn't care less about the audience. Most of the audience are not die hard fans, and don't know what the f*ck they're playing half the time. Like the last show I went to, I was getting off on their space jams, while everyone was looking at me like, "what the F*ck is this guy dancing to?". MMW I think for the most part has eschewed fame and fortune for musical freedom, which I respect, and I would want the same thing for my band, but at the same time, it makes k=like their music less. Like I think most of the Radiolarians is crap.

Well although I respect Radiolarians, it is not the MMW I grew up with, so it's hard for me to enjoy. I like their live sht much better because they switch it up so much, but their new stuff I should say sounds like crap to my ears. It's not crap, I apologize.

It's not crap, >I apologize. HA! No need for apologies, I was just curious ... certainly not the MMW I grew up with in the 90s either, but would you really want them to be the same band? 10-15 years later?
I think they are still pushing and evolving and expanding their trio sound, and to me that is exactly what I want. I trust these guys implicitly and I am always game to listen to where they take me! And I would have to respectfully disagree with saying they only "switch it up" in their live shows -- those 3 Radiolarians discs (or one giant album as I like to think of it) cross a multitude of territories ... at least to my ears ... I just never get tired of digging into the music MMW create ... there's always something to grab onto it seems, and as we make our way through seeding MMW shows chronologically on bt.etree with The Shack Project, and I comb through each show before seeding it, I am just stunned again and again how these three master non-verbal communication ... and it all boils down to a very spiritual experience for me, listening to their music ... and more I listen, the deeper that spirit goes it seems!

I totally agree with what you are saying, but as they have moved forward, so have I, and I don't have the time to explore their new stuff. MMW is the best jazzy fusion band around, and their live stuff is great, but they are mere children compared to Remember Shakti, which if you want a spiritual experience, go see them, if they ever play again. Sorry to say in this forum, but more people need to be exposed to the near infinite beauty of their work.

Yeah, the 4th Ballade is a masterpiece, as all four (but the fourth has something...) But IMHO, the intro to Kota is much more chopinesque, while Satan remebers me of George Antheil, especially La femme 100 têtes. Much of Radiolarians fans would like this. While into classicals, allow me to point you to Maurice Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit, especially Scarbo. I love Jean-Yves Thibeaudet's. I think this is my favorite "classical" piano piece of all.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-10 AT 11:10 AM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-10 AT 11:06 AM (EST) Remember Shakti- this is some awesome tripped out stuff man never heard of em and thank you for the introduction. only listened to a few songs but as far as i can tell i prefer MMW for the "cool" ness of the music and the insane melodies/anthems they manage to create. also they are truly an ensemble, no single band member hogs the show, even when they feature a guitar (a stereotypical lead-hogging instrument) amen though, i'm in VA where inevitably some redneck yells "PLAY FREEBIRD" no matter what band is playing! if i were the band i would stop the music right then and personally call him an asshole. *sigh* no wonder they don't come through here anymore. i think they should play what they want. the people who like to dance have a hard time getting into the rhythms of unheard songs unless they are in very basic 4/4 timing, which is lame for fans (like myself) who are into MMW for how complex the music is. alot of this also has to do with not being commercial, so most of the outlets and venues they play (in USA) are associated with the jamband scene- not a very sophisticated audience. i believe this band is by far the most genius thing to drop on jazz since miles davis' Pangea era. if you ask me they don't belong at allgood or bonnaroo for a bunch of young hipsters and white-dude dreadlocks to drug out on!

Yes, yes. But whenever they regroup, if we are lucky enough, please do yourself a favor and go see them. They are not just musicians, they have a psychic connection, more than I have ever seen. At least go see Zakir Hussain, he usually tours with any of a number of people each year. When Shakti plays, they play incredibly fast improvised runs, but completely on top of each other's rhythms at a million miles an hour. I have seen Zakir play short melodies on his left hand drum(!) that matched what another musician was playing without any rehearsal completely improvised on the spot. While you see MMW do this to a very slight degree; with Shakti, these are telepathic things, and if you go see them, you will understand, but will make Medeski and any other band seem like amateurs (not that they are in any way). Dammit, now I can't stop. I have to write about a dream I had involving MMW and how it changed my life and musical direction: Okay so I go to a concert in this theatre where MMW (my favorite band at the time) is playing and the entrance is up some stairs in a lobby. But I did not have a ticket and they were sold out, so I tried to sneak in, to no avail. So I go back down the stairs, and at the side of the stairwell, are all these Indian musicians. I stop to listen, and one guy with a very distinct face comes to show me some basic stuff on the tabla. And I try to play and it kind of works. That's the dream. Now in 2001, I went to my first Indian Classical concert, to see Ali Akbar Khan in Atlanta. So when we arrive, I start freaking out beacause the theatre is the same one from my dream, complete with the staircase to the entrance. I just had to stop and contemplate the moment, and my friends thought I was crazy. So we go in, and its 3 of us, and we have the 3 center front row seats (there was an odd number of seats in the row, so I sat in the very center of the front row. So then the tabla player comes out, and again I start freaking out because I had never seen him before, except it was the man from my dream, who showed me how to play tabla. Long story short, I abandoned playing western music and listening to MMW and came to CA to study tabla under the same tabla master I saw in the dream. Pretty crazy, huh?

Are you focusing on north or south indian music? Have you listened to any of Jonas Hellborg's recent work in South Indian music with the electric bass? I think its pretty cool.

Tabla is North. Yes Hellborg Selvaganesh Lane is spectacular, Hellborg plays South Indian Tala on acoustic bass guitar, unbelievable. Selvaganesh is in Remember Shakti, the best music ever played.
