"new tunes" |
Hey, what do you all think of the new songs from the past two shows (if you were lucky enough to go)? I had a great time in Burlington last night, it was great to see the guys again. It's been a few years since they've played there. I thought they were all over the place last night. Jazz, funk, groove, acoutic, psychedelic, spacey, and back again. I really dug the first song on set one, last two songs on set 2. All in all I thought they had 3-4 home runs, a couple triples, a couple doubles, a few base hits, and one strike out (second song, first set - didn't dig it at all). But all in all, great show, great concept. I want more.....

I was at the NH show on 2/22 in the front row and was blown away! This was only my second time seeing them live but I've been listening to them for years and I didn't recognize a single song. A few of the songs were really "Spacey" as you said and the last song of the first set was simply amazing! Mostly they grooved hard and there was one song in the second set where Chris just grooved the same bass line for something like 20 minutes it was insane! I see the VT show is up and will DL it later to see how it compared. Cheers, Jeff

I was at the show last night in NJ, and I was blown away with the new material. These songs are well crafted and have a lot of motion. I am very excited about this upcoming album because I think it will be one of their best.

I loved the CT show, the steel guitar song that Chris played was just incredible and there was this real trancy middle eastern vibe song that also had elements of reggae that John played the Melodica on. I loved going though and just hearing something that was completely new. Also the new direction of the band comes as a much welcomed releif after End of the World Party. Can't wait to see how the album forms and how they play in the next legs of the tour.

I saw the NH and VT shows, and I really think the new material is the best stuff in years and encapsulates everything I love about MMW. There are funky tunes, spacy tunes, dark tunes, jazzy tunes ... and they're all improv-heavy. It really reminds me of the sound they had on Combustication and The Dropper. The best part is we get 2 more albums worth of material this year.

Sinko 25 were the VT and NH shows the same? I'm thinking of going Friday night to the MA show but it's a bit of a haul. Thanks

I actually listened to the VT show tonight after downloading it and the sets were very similar just the order was different in a few cases. Can't say I cared too much for the first song on the VT show, I think they pulled it off a little better the second night. Just my $.02 though.

Yeah, the songlist was identical, they were all in different order of course, and the songs are changing night to night. i'm also thinking about the MA show just to see how the songs have evolved, but after the long haul last weekend I might just wait for the tape.

I caught the Portsmouth show and thought the compositions were fantastic, and the playing of the same caliber...there was one tune played in Portsmouth that was not played in S. Burlington, and that's the last tune of the show...which could have simply been a blues jam, but could very well be a tune...we'll have to wait and see. Here's what I came up with for temporary setlists based on Todd's (newplanet7) recording of 2/21 and Mike's (shackaholic) recording of 2/22. I just find it makes it easier for referring to the songs: ----------------------------------------------------- **2008-02-21** Set I 01. "Piano #1" 02. "More Worms!" 03. "Slinky Melodica" 04. "Bass Repetition" 05. "Tootie Pa Is The Thing" ENCORE 06. Let's Go Set II 01. "Trio Percussion" 02. "Groove 2 Smooth" > 03. "Winter Organ" > Bass Solo 04. "3 Movement House of Bubbles" > 05. "3 Movement House of Bubbles" cont'd > 06. Bamboo Pants (ending only) 07. "Guitar Toms Melodica" 08. "Hoppin' Piano" 09. "Heavy Bass Groove" --------------------------------------------------- **2008-02-22** Set I 01. "More Worms!" > 02. "Groove 2 Smooth" > "Winter Organ" * > Drum Solo 03. "Guitar Toms Melodica" 04. "Hoppin' Piano" > 05. illyB & John duo > 06. "Heavy Bass Groove" ENCORE 07. "Tootie Pa Is The Thing" Set II 01. "Bass Repetition" 02. "Piano #1" 03. "Trio Percussion" 04. "Slinky Melodica" 05. "3 Movement House of Bubbles" > 06. "Snow Blues for Portsmouth" * w/ Hip Chops quote ------------------------------------------------ NOTES: - temporary titles designed to reflect the music in some manner - "Groove 2 Smooth" > "Winter Organ" could very well be all one piece as well since they were paired up at both shows - "Snow Blues for Portsmouth" was NOT played the night before (at least I didn't hear it in my listening but I'm no expert) - obviously all of this is up for debate, and may need to be amended as the tour progresses -- especially if they start to split up some of the larger pieces into their distinct movements/sections. - I'm just doing this for my own sake and thought others might benefit as well -- call the tunes what you want! But this will be my key for listening. Again, very impressed with this batch of tunes and looking forward to the album and the rest of the year... dug

Nice, I was like how did he get the song titles so fast!!!! Took a minute for it to sink in. For the 2/22 show I like your name for track 4 (I was going to call it "Smokin' Piano" I keep listening to that track! Awesome. Snow blues is also a perfect name especially when I look outside and see it snowing AGAIN! Bad news is I heard on the news tonight their could be snow again Friday night! Looks like I won't make the trip to the MA show. Jeff

my girl and i went to the nh show and the ma show. the nh show had great intensity but the crowd was really obnoxious. the ma show was a bit more sedate, but the crowd was a bit more polite. we had good seats for ma, but abandoned them for some further back so we could see over the groovers. both shows were great, and i love the new material. i like the way they switch it around from show to show. the nh show was our first time seeing them live. i went hoping to hear some old standards, but wasn't disappointed when i didn't. i'd like to go on record(re. portsmouth), that i think it's insanely rude to put your body between the band and someone who was fortunate enough to aquire front row seating. if you want to dance, do it in the seat you paid for. if i'm not mistaken, thats what reserved seating is all about. we sat about 10 rows back from the stage so it didn't really effect our view. I just felt sorry for those who were looking forward to an alledged good seat. oh, and by the way, blocking paths of egress is a major fire hazzard. so is smoking in a 100 year old wood frame building.
